A Nigerian Correctional Service inmate from Kuje Detention Centre, Mr. Chinwendu Heart, graduated with an Upper Second Class Diploma in Theological Studies from the National Open University of Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement released by Federal Capital Territory Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chukwuedo Humphrey on Wednesday in Abuja.
Humphrey quoted the librarian, NOUN, Dr. Angela Okpala, who presented the certificate on Tuesday as encouraging the graduate to be a good ambassador for the university as well as the correctional service.
Speaking, Mr. Ibrahim Shehu, the officer in charge of Kuje Detention Center said that the detainee has shown exemplary character over time.
“The inmate was always diligent in his studies and also lived an exemplary life in detention,” he said.
Shehu urged other inmates to stop NOUN’s free education opportunity and improve themselves, adding that education is the foundation of human development.
The graduate, Heart, expressed his joy, saying that he came to Kuje Prison Center without a high school certificate.
Heart said that with the encouragement of staff, he has now graduated from college and hopes to use NOUN’s offer and study for a doctorate.
He further encouraged other inmates to engage in these reform regimes in the detention center instead of being idle and giving in to social vices.
