Bulldozers rolled through the streets of Delhi’s New Friends Colony neighborhood, where the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) was carrying out an anti-encroachment campaign on Tuesday. City officials were on Gurudwara Road in NFC to raze illegal temporary structures in the area.

SDMC, Central Zone, Chairman, Rajpal Singh, said: “People are insisting that we carry out the (demolition) campaign to discriminate against religious identities…we are doing it for their welfare. ambulances, firefighters should be allowed to cross Public roads must be cleared.

He added that barricades had been erected on the road between Gurudwara and Ashoka Park. This road will be cleared on Tuesday.

Tuesday also saw the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s anti-encroachment demolition campaign in the capital’s Mangolpuri area.

Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said it was against the anti-encroachment campaign and demanded it be stopped.

Press Agency ANI quoted AAP MP Mukesh Ahlawat saying: “When people left the area, why are (North MCD) creating inconvenience to them by using bulldozers by surrounding them. We are against it and this should be stopped. They need to first prove that there is encroachment.”

Police then arrested Ahlawat to prevent protests. “The anti-encroachment campaign is ongoing, the local MP (AAP MLA Mukesh Ahlawat) came here and said there is a need to use JCBs. To prevent the situation from being compromised, we have detained the MP “, DCP, Outer District, Delhi Police, says Sammer Sharma.

The anti-encroachment demolition campaign comes a day after the SDMC civic body had to return without carrying out the action in Shaheen Bagh on Monday following protests from residents and political leaders.

The SDMC plans to carry out the first phase of the demolition campaign from May 4 to 13 in several districts of South Delhi.

“Our law enforcement teams, along with police forces and adequate equipment such as bulldozers and trucks, have started removing kiosks, temporary structures, shacks or shops illegally set up near the Baudha Temple. Dharma, Gurudwara road and neighboring areas of New Friends settlement Our campaign against encroachment will continue,” said Rajpal Singh PTI.

SDMC’s conduct at Shaheen Bagh had seen people protest the action in large numbers and a complaint was also filed against AAP MP Amanatullah Khan for obstruction of conduct.

On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to hear a plea filed by the CPI(M) against the campaign to demolish Shaheen Bagh, saying it cannot interfere in the case at the request of a political party .
