After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a reorganization of the agency to “reset” its responses to public health threats, former CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield argued that this restructuring was the first step in a “long journey” to “look in the mirror” and realize that it has transformed into a cultural academic institution, on Saturday “Cavuto: Live”.

CDC DIRECTOR SAYS IT’S ‘FRUSTRATING’ WHEN HEALTH DECISIONS ARE ‘POLITICAL’

DR. ROBERT REDFIELD: I think at the heart of it all, when they really speak of a “reset”, i.e. what is the main role of the CDC. Is it an academic institution or a public health response organization? And when it started 75 years ago, working with the Department of Defense to work on malaria, it was a public health response agency. And, one, I think it’s eclipsed, over the 75 years, is having more of a culture of an academic institution.

Former CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield said it’s time for the public health agency to “look in the mirror” on “Cavuto: Live” on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

And I think at the heart of this report and what the director commented on, is it really time for the CDC to look in the mirror and kind of see what it’s become and ask its question, “Is its culture and structure optimized as a public health response agency or is it optimized as an academic institution?” And I think that’s the heart of it. So I think that’s an important first step. It’s going to be a long journey to try to change the culture of the agency and make it so that it can be a public health response.
