Two Georgetown University students said Friday that the university’s mask mandate in classrooms seemed more about control than science.

“We were told when we got back to campus and we’re in a classroom with the professor. We had to wear a mask,” Campus Reform correspondent Katelyn Rickert told “Fox & Friends.” .

“Now you don’t have to wear a mask in the gym. You don’t have to wear a mask in the cafeteria, not in the library, not in study spaces, not in dorms, only in the classroom when you’re with the teacher,” she said, adding that teachers weren’t required to wear the mask.

Georgetown University is asking its students to continue wearing masks during classroom instruction this fall amid persistent cases of COVID-19 and nationwide monkeypox outbreaks.

The mask mandate, which applies to students in classrooms and teaching labs, does not apply to “informal gatherings” in places such as libraries and study spaces, according to public health advice the Washington, DC school released Wednesday.

Students entering the third fall term since the pandemic are also required to wear masks on university-sponsored public transportation and at academic health facilities. In accordance with current DC rules, each student who was in quarantine must continue to wear masks for 10 days.

Unless they have an approved medical or religious exemption, students, faculty, staff, and visitors to Georgetown must have received a primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as a booster if they are eligible.

“We’re championing this for students,” Rickert said, calling the mandate “unscientific” and “outrageous.”

“Jessica and I are juniors and we haven’t had a single year without COVID on campus. I spent my entire freshman year in my living room doing classes, and it’s just not the same experience as to be on a college campus,” she told Katie. Pavlich.

Rickert said the mandate is “insane” since students immediately remove their masks when they leave the classroom.

Campus Reform correspondent Jessica Costescu agrees, saying the policy appears to be more about “optics”. She said the university is not living up to its motto of “following the science”.

Several colleges and universities across the country reinstated mask mandates last spring amid a “significant increase” in Covid-19 cases on the campus.
