RJ May of Powhatan commits to the University of Virginia for wrestling | Powhatan today

According to the NWCA Coaching Survey recorded on February 23, 2021, UVA ranked in the top 25 (No. 20) in the country.

A..J met a lot of great guys on the team. He likes the attitude they have when they come to work.

And with UVA being a Virginia school, several of the team’s wrestlers – including Atlee High School graduate Evan Buchanan, and St. Christopher’s alumni, Gray Hart, Erik Roggie, and Loudon Hurt – have either attended school locally or come from where he lives. , so he already knows some of them.

He will also see familiar faces representing the ACC teams on the other side of the mat. Two Powhatan High School alumni – Collin Gerardi, four-time state champion at Powhatan High School and 2020 NCAA qualifier, and state-placed Jarrett Tronge – are both vying for UVA rival Virginia Tech.

“I’m really excited – I’ve always faced local kids,” said RJ, “so going deeper into this rivalry just gives you more motivation to improve.”

As RJ continues to grow, making it difficult for him to project what weight class he’ll wrestle in in college, he currently expects him to struggle at 184 or 197 – “really just where the team needs me “.

In high school, RJ, who attends and wrestles for Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond, excelled in three different weight classes during his career, winning the regional championships at 138, 160 and 182 pounds respectively during his years of first, second and second years. .
