Dear parents / guardians,

This week, the St. Landry Parish School District and Port Barre High School (PBHS) learned that a few staff and students from PBHS and PBMS have tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the PBHS and PBMS campuses will be closed to students at the end of the day tomorrow, August 25. We take this precautionary measure to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all members of the community.

During this time, all students will receive distance education. PBHS and PBMS staff unaffected by the quarantine or virus will work virtually from school. Virtual learning will begin on Thursday, August 26, 2021, and in-person learning will tentatively resume on September 7, based on what the data tells us about the number of COVID-19 cases in the Port Barre area.

Your child will need to be signed in to their teachers’ Google classrooms to receive daily instruction during this time. Teachers will provide student login information tomorrow via student email or letters.

Chromebook loan agreement forms are mailed home today and must be returned tomorrow for students to receive their devices at school tomorrow.

The infant nutrition department arranges to provide PBHS / PBMS students to the PBHS campus. We will give more details on the distribution of lunch tomorrow.

We will be monitoring this situation closely and follow any instructions provided by the Louisiana Department of Health. Please note that while we have an obligation to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all members of our community, we must also protect the privacy of those affected by this virus. Only “close contacts” are required for quarantine. The Center for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) defines “close contact” as an individual who has been within six feet of a positive COVID-19 case for longer than fifteen consecutive minutes. The only people who should be quarantined are those who have been personally contacted by the health ministry or the school nurse.

If you are symptomatic, stay home and contact your doctor immediately. If your child receives a positive COVID-19 result, please contact nurse Katina Johnson at 337-585-7256 or nurse Sylvia Brown at 337-948-3646. Your cooperation in sharing information with our nurses and reporting any positive cases of COVID-19 within your family or close contacts is crucial.

All the other nursery schools in the Port Barre area will remain open for the time being.

Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter.
